SCORM is the most important acronym in eLearning — and the least understood. If you work in L&D, compliance, or HR training, you need to know what SCORM is, which version to use, and how to create SCORM-compliant content. This guide explains everything in plain language.
SCORM stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model. It's a set of technical standards that allow eLearning content to work with any Learning Management System (LMS). Think of it as the "USB standard" for training content — create once, play anywhere.
For most corporate training, SCORM 1.2 is sufficient and maximizes LMS compatibility. Use SCORM 2004 if you need sequencing rules, prerequisite logic, or detailed scoring beyond pass/fail. Satorio supports both versions.
SCORM captures specific data about learner interactions and progress. Here's what gets tracked:
This data flows from your course content back to your LMS, creating a complete record of learner engagement and performance.
Here's the simplified version of what happens behind the scenes:
You don't need to understand the technical details. Modern AI tools like Satorio handle all of this automatically — you just click "Export SCORM" and upload to your LMS.
You may have heard these terms used interchangeably, but they serve different purposes:
In 2026, SCORM remains the safe choice for 95% of corporate training. If your LMS supports SCORM, use SCORM. Consider xAPI only if you need to track learning outside the LMS (mobile apps, simulations, VR experiences, or social learning).
Usually a manifest issue. The imsmanifest.xml must be at the root of the ZIP file, not in a subfolder. If it's nested, your LMS won't find it and the course won't launch.
The content must send proper LMSSetValue calls to report completion. If your authoring tool doesn't set completion correctly, the LMS won't track it. Check your tool's SCORM export settings.
The content must report both cmi.core.score.raw and cmi.core.lesson_status. Some authoring tools only set one or the other. You need both for complete tracking.
LMS implementations of SCORM vary slightly. Test in your actual LMS, not just SCORM Cloud simulators. Some LMS platforms are more lenient with SCORM compliance than others.
Satorio's SCORM export is tested against 20+ LMS platforms including Moodle, TalentLMS, Cornerstone, SAP SuccessFactors, and Docebo. If you hit an issue, our support team helps troubleshoot.
The old way: build in Articulate Storyline ($1,199/year), publish to SCORM. Takes days.
The new way: describe your training topic in Satorio, AI generates everything, click Export SCORM. Takes minutes.
Both methods produce valid SCORM packages. The difference is time, cost, and the fact that Satorio adds interactivity automatically without you having to design slide layouts or animations.
